I wish I had been as well armed when I went out on my last mattress shop. I bought a very expensive one, influenced by the company’s vast advertising campaign. Nowhere do they mention that the material releases off-gasses (chemicals). It stinks. If I had done my research, I would have learned about off-gassing. When I wrote to the company in despair about the skunky smell, they said it would last for only three months and I would have to do all sorts of elaborate things to get the stench out beforehand. But that important bit of information is left out of the advertising, and the company I bought the mattress from never mentioned the issue either. When I called the seller to complain, it was as though I was the only customer to have ever had the experience. Research, research, research.

Here are the main issues to think about before purchasing a dishwasher:

Of paramount importance is the way a dishwasher stacks. Take a good long look at the racks and see how adaptable they are. Do they allow space for extra large platters, pots, and baking pans?

Noise level is another issue. Except for the very high-end machines that cost thousands of dollars, every dishwasher will make some sound. Ask for a demonstration to make sure you can live with it.

Length of washing time. Most people set their machine for a “normal” wash, which takes the maximum time. A “light” wash, which takes about twenty to thirty minutes less time, can sometimes do an adequate job. Experiment with it.

My repair person, Mr. Suzuki, says if you find a machine with a dial, buy it; they are better than the computerized brands. The number of options on most machines are unnecessary because most people use the “normal” setting all the time (see #3 above).
